Arbor Low Circle Henge (Derbyshire)

A Class II henge (entrances at NNW and SSE) enclosing a Limestone circle with central Cove. All the stones except one at the WSW are fallen.

OS Map Ref: SK161636

Access: Take the track up to the farm and, leaving entrance fee in the ‘honesty box’, pass through the farmyard to the henge beyond.

To the right of centre is the collapsed Cove, by which was found an extended human burial.

On the henge platform (diameters 52m by 40m), lies the remains of a circle with diameters 44m by 37m. Of about 60 stones, some as large as 4m, only one stone (right of centre) has not fallen (but only just).

The henge bank is some 80m by 75m and 2m in height. Inside this is a ditch 9m wide by 2m deep.

A Bronze Age round barrow was later added to the SE henge bank.
